name-variant-search's Issues

Missing German-Czech aliases

I don't know much about this topic, but Bohemian people historically used both German and Czech variants of their names. These are currently not predicted by the name variant search tool.

One example is:
Dora Rudolfine Richter, also known as Dora Rudolfa Richterová

Search result preview

Run a search query in the background, load and render the results in a usable way.

Help wanted with UX design here as it's potentially a lot of information to deal with. Nested/collapsable lists? Tabs? What makes most sense for OSINT researchers?

Bug: Google results are cached on refresh, but input state isn't

Basically if you leave and come back, you have leftover google results but the input is cleared, so the page is sort of out of sync with itself until you enter a new search term.

So either don't show the google results until we have some selected names, OR cache the selected/suggested state across refreshes (using a cookie or localstorage?).

Responsive mobile layout

Low priority but nice to have. Mobile accessibility was cited as a "peripheral need" in a report on the user needs of fact checkers by NORDIS.

Results seem more like re-ordered names vs variations

This is a great concept and would be very useful. However, the only variations I see are

  • first name, last name
  • first name initial, last name
  • last name, first name

Should the tool be called name re-ordering vs variations? I assumed variations would show results like
Dmytro Firtash or Dmytrii or Dimitry
Igor Kolomoisky or Ihor or Kolomoiskii or Kolomoisky or Kolomoiskiy
etc.

And this is a very basic one:
Joe Biden or Joseph Biden

User interface could split variants by "module"

For example, if the transliteration module of the alias generator generates lots of names that I know are not relevant to my search, it would be helpful to have those split into a specific section (that could perhaps be collapsed, etc.)

More sites to search

Suggestions from social media feedback:

  • Yandex > in my experience it works well if you can't find a name on any other search engine
  • LinkedIn > but with warning that users can see profiles that search them
  • Yahoo > sometimes yields interesting and rare results.
