beakerbrowser.com's Issues

Take a thorough pass at docs styling

There are still some loose ends:

  • Remove icons from links in nav
  • Check that page titles are sentence case
  • Get rid of scroll bars on code blocks
  • Check for instances of P2P, and confirm that "peer-to-peer" isn't more appropriate (wait until after help docs branch is merged)
  • Check margin/padding on lists, images, code blocks

Add Docs about Version in Dat URLs

As mentioned on IRC, it seems tha the Beaker docs lost a page about the details behind the Dat URL and how the version portion works.

Versioning is a big part of Dat IMO, and it seems there is no clear documentation about it anywhere anymore. 😅

Add Programming section

Separate from the (existing) Tools section

  • Introduction:
    • Basics: how Beaker apps are different from Web, and how theyre the same
    • Architecture: apps scheme, latest es6 features, async/await, builtin build chain
  • How Beaker apps are different
    • Philosophy: offline-first, user-configurability, lots of small apps working together
  • How to build Beaker apps
    • Protocols: dat archives and feeds
    • Using app scheme
    • Intro to APIs

Replace the FP demo-video CTA with a gif

The demo video is cool but gifs are the real money

It could show:

  • Creating a site with bkr
  • Publishing a site with dathttpd
  • Live-reloading dev with bkr
  • Forking a site with bkr
  • Forking a site in the UI
  • Saving a site and having it load offline

Small collection of feedback

  • max: "Beaker is a new browser and protocol" -- protocol seems weird
  • brian
    • i would make it ‘browse / build / experiment'
    • you could change ‘experiment’ to ‘borrow’ too? i mean it’s slightly less exactly what’s happening but dat illeteration
    • border radius looks different on the 3 panels and the buttons
  • jhand
    • "its not clear to me reading the site that you can browser normal sites too"
    • "opacity animation on the video is a bit much for me (its seems like that or the play button affecting the font render on "watch the demo")"
  • me:
    • we should indicate that it's in an unfinished state (pre alpha)
    • I think I want to revisit our intro copy lol
  • john

Privacy Policy

There should be a product privacy policy for the Beaker Browser. How does using it impact people’s privacy? What data are they sharing and with who? What does that analytics setting really do and where does it go? For how long will accessed websites be made available to other people using Dat? Where is data stored and is it stored ssecurely?

The header/nav situation needs help

Hi, my name's Tara, and I built a header/nav that's turned into a hot mess 😎

Steps to remedy the situation:

  • Make a version of the logo with text
  • Don't use absolute positioning for the nav
  • Consider tucking the nav behind a hamburger icon (or something similar) on small screens. This will make our lives easier when we add other nav links.

Translation of the Website?

Dear BeakerBrowser-Team,

Would it be possible to somehow help translate the website to other languages? If so, how should one go about helping to provide a translation of the website?

Looking forward to your reply,
gesundelehre

Beaker crashes when accessing dataset

The dataset dat://386ef60e56eb9edb878738ee35ee6e95c8552902985e725a5901ae6851e25d00/ causes Beaker to freeze and then crash when it is loaded.

CPU usage goes to 100% before, the interface becomes unresponsive.

I'm using beaker-browser-0.8.0-prerelease.6-x86_64.AppImage on Ubuntu 18.04

Homepage mobile layout broken

Hey, I'm not sure if this is the same as #51, but the layout is seriously broken on the homepage for mobile.

Have pulled and tried to compile the site locally but for some reason sass will not compile. If I figure it out i'll make a PR but i think it has to do with flex-container: row in .hero__links. If I set it to column the layout looks correct on both mobile and desktop (haven't done a lot of browser testing yet though).

Recipient of Dat URL needs Beaker installed?

It's not particularly clear whether the recipient of the Dat URL needs Beaker installed or not to be able to view what I'm sending...

Tried it out on another device without Beaker installed (nothing worked) so I'd assume the URL recipient would need to have this running too?

This info isn't stated explicitly anywhere I can find. Maybe add it to the FAQ?

Feed(s)?

  • rss
  • atom
  • activitystreams
  • jsonfeed

or will you tell to just follow on twitter?

New help docs

After #10 is merged

Need to add detailed docs (lessons) for using Beaker with the bkr cli.

  • Installing Beaker and Bkr
  • Download button should go to installing help page
  • Creating a new site
  • Publishing changes
  • Using .datignore
  • Setting up your site manifest (dat.json)
  • Live-reloading and bkr dev
  • Checking out a site
  • Forking a site
  • Hosting from home
  • Cloud-Hosting with DatHTTPD
  • CTA on the intro

Dat over TLS ( dat://beakerbrowser.com )

dat://beakerbrowser.com was the first URL it tried after reading about the Dat over HTTPS feature, but it doesn't resolve yet :)

by comparison, hostless.website loads over HTTPS now. it's super cool:
