Because the gpg-agent uses a unix domain socket for interprocess communication, the path of the homedir is capped at a somewhat small limit - I believe 108 characters, although this might vary from system to system. (We hit this problem pretty qucikly with the GitPromptServer in atom/github.)

Fortunately, gpg-agent includes a workaround to redirect the socket elsewhere: if ${GNUPGHOME}/S.gpg-agent is a regular file with contents like:

%Assuan%
socket=/path/to/where/ever/you/want/S.gpg-agent

Then gpg and gpg-agent will use the provided (shorter) path as an alternative.

I'll have to make sure we fall back to this if we're butting against the path limit.
