I think it would be fine for them to be in their own functions, but that it makes sense for combiner to act as the "glue" that holds the input and output together.
For example, I could imagine combiner calling functions to determine for each image which pixels should be masked in the combination and maintaining a FlagCollection
to track those masks in the CCDData
result it produces.
