I suggest taking a look at @edsu's pymarc to use as an alternate parser for MARC21 records. For one reason, it's more actively maintained - it appears Nathan Denny's parser hasn't been updated since 2000. Full disclosure - I'm one of the maintainers.

Is there any specific reason you don't use the MARC Leader field to help interpret the 008 - in theory it is the Leader position 06 (i.e. 7th char), occasionally in combination with Leader 07, that dictates the format of the material described.

But it may be that you've found the Leader to not be reliable? (or I've misread the code and you are using it!)
