I'm not really sure what spotify-gnome is supposed to do about that. It doesn't actually listen for key presses, it just translates the default dbus signals that gnome/gnome-shell sends into the MPRIS dbus signals that Spotify is listening for. If you're not running gnome-shell, then it should be the responsibility of your window manager (or something your window manager runs) to generate those signals.

Yeah I understand.. sucks that ubuntu broke this for non unity users :(
