3.0.6 thinks that it is 3.0.5

Beta 3.0.6 when run still displays 3.0.5 in the top bar, and lights the light
indicating a download is available when there is no more recent version.

Features for groups.

Select some objects, group them, right click, edit selection, get to group
settings dialog with;

Alpha (slider) - "Adds" to the alpha of each object.
Name (string) - For when you want your group to show up on the BOM.
Show components of group in BOM (checkbox) - Should the individual components
of the group show on the BOM.

Perhaps giving the group a name will group the components on the BOM and the
checkbox be reversed (Don't show...).

Enhancement: Vertical strip board / Rotate selection?

The strip (Vero) board is a great component, but currently it only allows
horizontal strips.

It would be great if there was a way to rotate it, so the strips were vertical.
Not a major issue I know, but Im trying to translate a complex breadboard to a
stripboard, and I keep having to rotate my head :D

Components "squished" together upon reload.

Not sure if this is a general problem, or a problem trying to read 3.0.6 files
in 3.0.7.

What happens is that when a file is loaded, the components are squished much
more closely together than when it was saved. I think perhaps it has something
to do with user defined grid spacing being ignored at some point, perhaps when
file is saved or reloaded.

Attached is a file that appears squished when reloaded. Grid spacing is 0.125"

Also attached is a png of the same circuit before it was squished.

Files that contain images cannot be reopened. Not sure if this is a more
general problem.
There seem to be other problems with images too, including failure to display
image (jpeg) on load.

Perf board rendering incorrectly

3.0.6B

Marshall style perf-boards often render incorrectly, with the holes overlapping
the edge of the canvas. Occurs to a lesser extent with the eyelet board.

Absence of 8 and 9 pin tube sockets is now the only thing preventing this from
being practically useful for most of us.

Curved traces wont allow two points on same grid point

When you create a curved pcb-trace you can't place two of the control points at
the same location. This means you can't do nice smooth bends like you could in
v2, as this is somewhat my trademark when it comes to pcb-design this is a
major feature for me.

Sticky points affects selectability of objects

What steps will reproduce the problem?
If two connection points touch, and the sticky points take effect, after I move
one component, the other one seems to de-activate. It ceases being selectable.
This seems to affect traces more than other components. The object still
responds to sticky points, but is either impossible to individually select
(lower occurrence), or it's main body is un-selectable, but its endpoints are
still active (more frequent).

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Typically, once I lay down a trace, its entire length is selectable, but this
bug usually makes it so that once moved with a sticky point, it's only
selectable at its endpoints, or not at all.

Compnents sticking together

Using 3.0.6 Beta on Ubuntu 10.10.

I put four components on top of each other, then selected the top component and
clicked Send to Back a few times and Send to Front. (I found that Send to Back
sends the component down one component rather than to the back which I expected
- but this is more useful, it's just that the command seems wrongly named,
maybe "Towards Back" or "Down one Layer" would be better.)
I then tried to move my originally selected component away from the others, but
it was stuck to them. I tried "Ungroup", but the only way I found to unstick
them was to select a component, Edit it and rotate it 90o clockwise.

Saved file and log file attached.

Ruler sometimes jumps when scrolling

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Create a new project
2. Select ruler units [cm]
3. Change grid spacing units to [mm] or [cm] (example: cm)
4. Enter grid spacing other than whole unit (example: 0,5)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expected the grid to be aligned with the ruler, but is it not.
The scale is different, so they are be aligned at some points, but are
misaligned at other.

(example: when 0,5cm grid spacing is chosen, every grid line should be aligned
with the ruler - but it's not)

*However, If the ruler units are in [cm] and grid spacing is set to 1 [cm],
then they appear to be in perfect alignment.

Lost objects cause performance degredation

Objects like boards lost off the edge of the canvas can cause severe
performance degradation (resembling a hard crash at the most extreme), and can
cause other weirdness.

Basic boards, in particular, act strangely if dragged off the canvas by
accident or if the board is resized smaller. Even when the canvas size is
increased to subsequently show them, they usually have become zombies that
cannot be moved or resized.

Unresponsive state induced by zooming and scrolling

3.0.7: Messing with the zooming levels (i.e. choosing a few different ones in a
short period of time) makes the program unresponsive...scroll bars stop working
and component selection wont work. Not a hard crash, as it will (I think)
eventually come back, but may take several minutes. It also responds correctly
to requests to close the window.

When will you restore some form of zooming with the mouse wheel? If I can't
talk you into making that the default, then at least can it be a "shift-wheel"
for zoom?

Ruler hard to use.

The ruler is really hard to use to position components, because the red marks
show the current position of the pointer, and don't tell you anything useful
about the position of the object being dragged. It would be very helpful to
have additional little half-height markers on the ruler that show you the max
top, bottom, right, and left of the selected object(s).

Clicks still sometimes failing to register

Sometimes it is still taking more than one click to place an item during
component placement. The first click will be ignored, it seems about one time
in 15 or 20, I'm not sure if there is a reliable way to reproduce. It happens
sometimes too when placing the second spot for an item such as a wire, not
always just on the first click.

Original issue reported on code.google.com by [email protected] on 27 Feb 2011 at 6:01

Feature requests!

Playing around with this, there are a few features that would be very helpful:

1. Have a "master switch" for view values, view name, or individual settings.
Setting to "Display values", for instance, would override the individual
component settings and show only values for every component... etc.

2. A key, that while pressed, overrides "snap-to-grid". It turns out to be
fairly inconvenient to go to the menu to disable snap to grid every time you
want to fine position, or attach a wire to a tube socket, etc., then re-enable
it when done.

3. An *awesome* feature would be a "clone" button, that would allow you to use
an existing component as a template, and would "clone" that component, but with
your own default settings.... so I could easily create, for instance,
electrolytic caps using the template, that correspond to my 47uF, 33uF, 22uF,
and 10uF sizes. Added parts would be added to the library and persist between
openings of the program. There are a couple of ways these could be
displayed...either up top with everything else, or, when you select a template,
it would show you the "daughter" parts based on it on a lower row. You would
also need a way to delete unwanted clones.

Bug reports and enhancements from Paul F

1. Pulling the bottom left hand corner of a vero board to the left of the top
right hand corner no longer makes it disappear, but not everything is drawn
correctly.

2. Pulling an object off of the current area makes it disappear, possibly
forever. It would be much better to have objects off the work area visible
(maybe with different alpha), but set up so that they would not appear in
printouts, PDFs or images... as I mentioned before it is very useful to have
some "scratch" space off the main layout where you can stash things.

3. Boards can be shrunk until one dimension becomes zero. When this happens, it
becomes a line that can never be re-expanded. 2D objects should not be allowed
to shrink to 1D, and 1D objects should not be allowed to shrink to a point (the
last seems to have been corrected).

4. If I create an object like a pad, then change the grid dimensions, the
previously created objects will snap to the new grid differently then newly
created objects when moved.

5. I've noticed that the ctrl move option to over-ride it from snapping to the
grid is gone. I'll miss this.

6. Feature request: I know there are little red sliders along the ruler
indicating current position, but it would be very helpful to have an actual
numeric coordinate displayed somewhere as well.

7. When I select an IC, it is not rendering correctly until I click on it to
see properties, then just click OK... the pins are coming out weird. Looks like
this happens with the switch sometimes too...
Looks like this behaviour happens when the grid spacings are altered...

8. The BoM is still listing every wire used. Surely it's enough to just list
once each color of wire and gauge combination of wire that's been used?

9. This is a biggie. Once objects have "stuck" I can't seem to unstick them..
In V2, I could shift-select (I think it was) an object or group of objects so
that it could be moved without dragging along everything that was stuck to it.

10. For hookup wire and other things where the two click drop makes less sense,
maybe you could show and move around a shadowed version of the object until you
select where it goes (kind of like the way LTSpice does it)?

11. The two click placement method seems OK, but ideally, you could have two
selection behaviours.. if the user just single clicks and releases on a
component item, then that could activate the two-click system like you have
now. But it would be really really nice if you added the ability to
click-and-hold on a component, and have it activate a drag-and-drop mode where
a shadowed version of the object is dragged onto the canvas and dropped upon
release of the button. I think you would find that both methods could live very
happily side-by-side, and it would make item placement very intuitive indeed.

12. Nag... Layer lock, especially for boards, was a good V2 feature!

13. There's another bug with IC's... sometimes, after they've been created,
they can't be moved until "OK" has been clicked in the properties.

14. It's possible to put two components right on top of each other so that one
disappears, as right now there's no way to separately move them. This is
particularly a problem for things like ICs where there is no pivoting action.

15. There seems to be a bug with the two-click method where I sometimes seems
to need to do the second click several times before it "takes" and draws the
object.

16. I notice that the switch cannot be rotated, and that the IC only in 90deg
increments. The ability to specify an exact amount of rotation was occasionally
very useful in V2, especially for things like tube sockets.

17. There is something weird with clicking on a bare part of the canvas.
Sometimes, it gives you the project properties as expected. But sometimes, it
seems to think it is on a board (when it is not). You can see a green dot
appear as if it is going to place a board. It doesn't, but if you click again,
you are adjusting the properties for the non-existent board. When this is
happening, you can also not click-and-hold to select several objects..again, it
thinks you are selecting a non-existent board.

Suggestions from Paul

Alpha 3.0.4

1. Rotating a pot 180 degrees results in a misdraw.

2. For ICs (probably elswhere, row spacings can be made so small only pins are
showing. It can also be made negative, which results in a component misdraw.

3. Setting project grid spacing too small (I think sub-1mm) causes a hard
crash.

4. Similar hard crashes occur when setting element spacing too small in vero
boards, etc. so this seems to be a general problem.

5. Picture placement and scale to small size seems to cause hangs. Have tried
so far only with a png.

6. Clicking on a "new project" item only changes its component value, not the
value of the text, which must be changed from the Edit Project. This is
counter-intuitive. Nobody cares what the component number is for an annotation
or comment.

7. Passive component thumbnail drawing for radial cap is confusing as it is
solid blue. Can it have the light blue interior like the full-size ones please?

8. The boards being allowed to shrink to a point then disappear bug is back.

9. Crazy feature request... if I click on an item in the BoM, can it select
that item?

10. If I click to select a component, but then change my mind and go instead to
another tab, it changes to the new tab ok... but if I then go to the main
canvas it is still showing the old component. Clicking to a new tab before
completing component placement should abort component selection.

11. Why did you get rid of thumbwheel zooming? That is way more awesome and
useful than scrolling. Thumbwheel scrolling sucks, because there are two
dimensions in which you scroll, and you usually need to scroll left to right,
not up and down anyway. At the very least, make thumbwheel zoom a
ctrl-thumbwheel combo or something.

12. Once I've made the canvas big, it won't let me then reduce the project size
to levels that should be allowable, even if there are no objects outside the
area I want.

13. When exporting to PDF or PNG, any chance of having a rectangle frame placed
corresponding to the document size?

14. "Bring to front" doesn't actually bring to front, it seems to be bringing
it forward in the layer hierarchy... it often takes several applications of
"Bring to front" to get something TO the front. Most apps have separate
controls for bring to front/send to back and move up/down layer.

Cheers,

Paul

Fixed rotation angles are very limiting for tubes

The default, 90, 180, and 270 options for rotation are good enough for many
components, but are something a serious limitation for tube sockets.. It is
very rare that the optimal alignment falls right on one of the axis... I much
preferred the V2 option of arbitrary rotation angles.

Display multiple attriubtes for components

Currently resistors, capacitors, etc can only display one of their attributes
(like name, or value)

It would be nice if the component could display multiple attributes at the same
time like name, capacitance, voltage rating, etc.

buttons, some config options, open/save ... Nice to see/change quickly which
features are enabled.

Praise: Nice to see that things that aren't aligned to grid doesn't snap back
to "on grid" when moved as part of a selection where something is aligned to
the grid.

Bug: I do feel though that when moving parts that aren't on the grid, but with
"snap to grid" enabled the pieces should keep their "off-grid'ishness" and not
snap back to the grid, i.e. act like there was something I moved that was "on"
the grid.

Heartbreak: I miss the option of holding down the ctrl-key to disengage "snap
to grid".

Bug: Labels for the standing resistors?

Feature request: Click the labels in the list of selected items to select only
that part. Nice when there's a lot of overlapping parts and traces and you want
to select just one of them without locking layers.

While I remember, a function to "add missing solder pads", that adds solder
pads for every component leg that doesn't already have one right under it. I
tend to add all pads that aren't for off board wiring or jumpers as the last
thing. Would be nice to have it automated, even though the "continuous
creation" setting is a bless.

Suggestions from freestompboxes

1. A "send to front" and send to back" option would be helpful along with the
move up - move back already available.
2. Being able to have an extra control point to bend the leads of a component
would also be helpful when doing layouts on a turret board. Look at how I used
jumpers on the cathode bypass caps in my layout below to make the parallel
connections.

Problem parsing numbers when comma is decimal separator

I'm in a country where we use commas instead of dots in numbers. Java seams to
know this and shows the value with a comma (i.e. 1,25) but if I edit the value
I have to replace it with a dot (i.e. 1.25, strangely not for values I don't
edit I suppose you don't "bother" to read those).
