Issue:
whenever one tries to import blueprint conversions of big (say: 1000x600 px) images, the game fps takes a BIG hit, sometimes freezing the game in the process.
This gets worse, when you have the blueprint loaded, if you accidentally stamp the blueprint down the game takes a lot of time to process that.

System spec: Relatively good hardware with a Ryzen 7 5800H, 32GB RAM, RTX3070 (8GB VRAM)

I don't think the factorio devs will implement a performance fix for the following reason.

• The blueprint book is intended to serve to store design pieces of your factories, not items that would take up all of factory space.

I think this is caused by JSON serialization. (not confirmed, just a guess)
