Sorry for the slow response on this issue - I just got back from vacation.
For performance reasons, Boxer 1.3.2 and below will only apply rendering styles to low-resolution graphics modes: specifically, less than 640 pixels wide and less than 400 pixels high. (This is because the rendering styles looked bad and ran too slow on high resolution graphics - at least on the kind of Macs and screens that were around back when I wrote that code in 2009.)
It's likely that these Koei games use an uncommon 'medium' resolution like 640x200, which is just wide enough that Boxer will disable the rendering styles for it - even though they'd probably look and run OK.
The next version of Boxer removes this resolution limit, and replaces these rendering styles with hardware effects that look better and in most cases should run faster as well. I can't give you an ETA on when the next version will be released though.
