You can change this by setting the environment variable: AI2THOR_VISIBILITY_DISTANCE to a float value > 0.0

I plan on deprecating the environment variable in a future release in favor of a parameter passed during Initialization, but it will work just fine with the current release.

you can set this in Python by doing the following:

# set distance to 4.0 meters
os.environ['AI2THOR_VISIBILITY_DISTANCE'] = '4.0'
# start ai2thor here
