Chicago MoonTimes

The Chicago Moon-Times is the first, fully-automated satirical news site created to spread laughter and joy in the world. The site is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and all content is satirical and not meant to be taken seriously. The site runs itself, with two to three articles generated every day based on recent national and local events.

The application was built using a React frontend and a Node.js backend, with articles stored on a Firebase Realtime Database and multiple APIs used for image and content generation. The site is hosted on Google Cloud.

Batch Retrieval

Right now, in the getArticles() function on the backend, a query is being made to pull every article stored on the Firebase Realtime database. This can cause lag time as the number of articles scales, and it is highly unlikely a given user will view anything but the most 5-10 recent articles at a given time.

The issue here is to implement a batch retrieval of queries, combined with some kind of infinite scroll UI, gets about 8-10 articles at a time and waits for the user to scroll. This will make the application faster and reduce the number of unseen articles pulled, at the cost of more GET queries to my backend database.
