thorium-win's Issues

When I hold down Ctrl and left click a link, it doesnt just open that link in a new tab, it also in addition opens it up

...in my current tab, without asking me, so now i have two tabs with the same exact URL & I also lost the place I was at on my 1st tab & have to hit the back button. Sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesnt, & Ctrl+leftClick sometimes only opens up link in new tab which is what i want. But here below is a URL it does this problem with, click on any post in the list of posts, hit Ctrl+LeftClick & it opens up two duplicate URL tabs. I'm not sure if brave, firefox or chrome has this problem too. But would appreciate it if Thorium would change this annoying, inconveniencing, unpredictable inconsistency. -Thanks!

Without compatibility issue and flags

Hello, I still prefer to wait for the problem of compatibility with windows 10 to be resolved by default and without user intervention before using the excellent Thorium Browser as my main browser, and I suggest that while waiting for this bug to be resolved that Mr lex make a chromium version with avx or avx2 and fma not very advanced technically and sophisticated, a version has been modified too much in order to avoid compatibility problems, I say that I recently tested a chromium version with avx and fma but not as modifed as Thorium browser and I noticed that the fan of my computer does not turn any more and does not produce any more noise! therefore the version with fma and avx seems to solve the problem of the annoying activation of the fan that's why I suggested that Mr. Alex make a more basic version of Thorium browser in order to solve all the compatibility problems.....

I went to discover the chromium flags and I discovered several superfluous flasg for me and that we can deactivate, by exp Tab Hover Card Images, the NTP flags, mirroring, prerender... I learned about all these flags and my browser works fast and without bugs, I suggest that Tohrium make a special version or add an option to disable, for example, all experimental flags such as experimental javascript, smooth scrolling....thus the notebook battery will be preserved.....thank you

[BUG] Thorium crashes in settings page

System Information

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Thorium Version: 105.0.5166.0

Observable Problem

When I go into chrome://settings and I use the 'Search settings' feature, after a few characters my browser unexpectedly closes. Also, this happened on a fresh install without any extensions added.

For the love of god, I've accidentally exited out of my regular & incognito browser session multiple times. can you please

For the love of god, I've accidentally exited out of my regular & incognito browser session multiple times, because my mouse cursor(i have a touchpad) accidentally shot towards the exit button & touchpads are very sensitive so my fingertip also registered as a left click. Or I accidentally hit the exit button instead of the "restore down" or "minimize" button right next to it. Can you please make an
"are you sure?" popup to make sure i actually want to exit out of my browser session?
Brave browser, Chrome browser, etc have this failsafe.
-Thanks Frickmeister!

"Find Tool" box annoyingly moving around while using it, while clicking it's up/down buttons

I've had this problem forever, i think this problem even occurs with Brave browser & Chrome browser, not sure though.
So when i use the "Find Tool" to find a word on a website, the "find tool" itself, half way through the words i'm combing through, the box will move instantaneously an inch to the right or left while I'm still clicking on it rapidly, which causes me to accidentally click the bookmark underneath that tool's window, or where that tool window just was, but moved away from, so i then accidentally rapidly click on the bookmark, i then lose the webpage I'm on & lose the place/position on the page & progress I made with combing through it, searching for a word. This is incredibly annoying & inconveniencing. Also its baffling, who in the world would design it to do this? for the box to jerk around like this? I know it wasnt the designers of thorium of course, probably google chrome. This problem also doesnt just occur with websites, but with pdfs, etc that you have opened up on the browser.

Please see this video screen recording i made below.
SOLUTIONS, that i can think of. 1.) Stop it from jerking around, make it stay in one place.
Solution 2.) or find a way, instead of using the mouse cursor to click the find up or find down button, have keyboard shortcuts that one can press rapidly instead. Like Alt+S for UP, & Alt+ D for DOWN.

M112.0.5615.166 thorium.bat

Latest zip extracted to usb with W10 22H2 on home PC thorium.bat with the appended --disable-encryption --disable-machine-id works fine. (I have Brave and Firefox installed, but no Edge. Defender has also been disabled on this machine and no AV is actively scanning.)

However, on a work PC W10 20H2, clicking on thorium.bat throws an error. (I can't remember the code, as it flashed with a message in Korean and disappeared.) Removing the two portability flags from thorium.bat didn't solve it. Also, the file extension .bat disappears completely, like it's being disabled by something in the background. I tried starting the browser from the BIN folder, but got the same error. I even tried extracting the zip again (on my USB) on the work PC and starting fresh. Unfortunately, thorium will not open on this work PC, and it would be useful if I had the exact error code. Sorry for not having the error code.

The work PC has outdated versions of Chrome browser and Edge preinstalled. Defender is active but real-time protection has been turned off. Since it's a work PC, I can't really mess with it - like crippling Defender. Every time the PC is restarted, W10 returns to its original install state.

There's not much to go on as to why it works at home and not at work. It's possible that Defender, the office network, or the presence of Chrome may be interfering with Thorium. That said, I really like the browser, but I need its portability at work more than at home. Cheers for the hard work though.

Error 0xc0000142

Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me.
I am getting the error "0xc0000142" when trying to open the Thorium executable. The mini installer also presents a problem for me, I click on it and nothing happens, not even an error appears.
I tried it in a virtual machine with windows 11 and had the same problem, I also tried it in another one with windows 7 and had a different problem (I couldn't open it).
I tested it on someone else's computer with windows 7 and Thorium worked normally. This led me to believe that there is something missing in my computer to run the browser but I have tried everything (I've been at it for about 3 days) and I couldn't make anything work.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me... maybe tell me what needs to be installed for the browser to open on my computer. Thanks.

Thorium vs ungoogled-chromium [Test Speed at start new unkown page]

Hi guys, I've tested the Thorium and Thorium_AVX2 VS the my ungoogled-chromium (With hardware Aceleration enable)
My pc specs are:

  • Windows 11 (I try add the windows 8 compatibility mode to the Thorium builds)
  • Intel Core i7 4790k (Lastest drivers)
  • AMD Rx 6750 xt (Updated drivers)
  • 32 GB DDR3 Corsair 1600Hz

for both i get this result on GPU flag:
image

I would know how can i solve the slow start, i am not sure if is it a bug... or dont know, see by your self:
Note: Thorium stay using my profile of ungoogle-chromium but its restore to default flags settings

Left is THORIUM ------------------------------- Right is ungoogled-chromium

librewolf_lvScijNDPW.mp4

What should I do for solve this?, why its very slow like my firefox?
PD: Question, what build should I use, Thorium_AVX2 or Thorium? Considering that my processor i7 4790k and GPU

Thorium crashes with SSE4 version even though CPU supports SSE4.2

Thorium is great and I'm using the portable AVX2 version on my desktop computer.

However, the non-AVX2 (but SSE4) version 106.0.5237.0 version with the exact same setup crashes with 0xc0000142 on my Celeron N3350 laptop with error message 0xc0000142. The very same non-AVX2 version runs just fine when starting on my desktop computer. https://github.com/Alex313031/Thorium-Win/releases/tag/M106.0.5237.0

I tried Thorium Special SSE3 (last Win release M105.0.5172.0) which works - but the laptop cpu does feature SSE4.2, see cpu-z screenshot, so the SSE4 version should run? https://github.com/Alex313031/Thorium-Special/releases/tag/M105.0.5172.0

CPU-Z

Edit: Please regularly update all version AVX, SSE4.2, SSE3 - as you see, someone is using them :-)

M99.0.4803.0 randomly crashes

Hi,

Running on Win 10, using Chromium Launcher, browser profile is on a network drive. Launcher command line is:

ChromiumCommandLine=--user-data-dir="W:\xxxxx" --no-default-browser-check --allow-outdated-plugins --disable-logging --disable-breakpad --enable-tab-audio-muting --show-component-extension-options --disable-ipv6 --disk-cache-dir="C:\xxxxx"

If I walk away from the desktop and come back hour or so later, I'd notice the browser is gone. When I reload it, says it crashed and it restores all my open tabs. This last time I had about 40 tabs but shouldn't matter as I have enough RAM in the system.

On at least one occasion it also crashed on startup. I remember clicking the icon and the browser loaded, then few moments later it was just gone. I thought to myself whether I actually clicked the icon or not, but I know I did, so it was a crash.

This was not happening with a regular Chromium or any of the other optimized flavours.

Thanks.

Starting on version 107, HEVC videos no longer play

They still work on 106, but starting on 107 they simply don't load inline on pages and if I open them directly, only the audio plays. Adding --enable-features=PlatformHEVCDecoderSupport to the launcher arguments also didn't work.

This affects both 107 from AVX2 releases as well, which is the version I use. But I just tested and this affects the mainline 107 from here as well, so I'm opening the issue on this repo instead.

Here's a GPU-Z report, if that's any useful.

[BUG] chrome://extensions/ page empty after syncing

Can't reproduce anymore but I saw the same issue mentioned here-

#Alex313031/thorium#47

So I dont know what solved this exactly but the issue was still there even after uninstalling and installing Thorium (both this version and AVX2 version), but I can tell some of the steps I did from start to finish.

TLDR is at the end.

So I installed Thorium yesterday for the first time and installed ublock origin, and tested the browser a bit. After I was satisfied I logged in to sync. I didn't have any extensions data in the chrome sync data on their site.

I was using ungoogled-chromium before this and I was wondering if I can just copy paste my extensions from there since I have more than 25 extension there.

So then I went to C:\Users\lucky\AppData\Local\Thorium\User Data and I couldn't find my profile under Default like in ungoogled-chromium, but found it in under the name Profile1 instead. I copy pasted extensions but they were corrupted so I just manually removed them.

After that I manually installed all of them.

Then I wanted to disable some extensions but I noticed the chrome://extensions/ page was empty, but I can still see the extensions in the top bar and all of them were still present in the the extension folder.

So I uninstalled and installed and tried AVX2 version too but after syncing, the extensions page was empty.

Then I went to github repo to see if this was mentioned and it was mentioned in the main Thorium repo, and wasn't reproducible by some people.

So I enabled logging like this C:\Users\lucky\AppData\Local\Thorium\Application\thorium.exe --enable-logging --v=1 and opened from terminal.

This was my log:

[10256:12224:0806/081609.642:ERROR:device_event_log_impl.cc(214)] [08:16:09.643] USB: usb_device_handle_win.cc:1048 Failed to read descriptor from node connection: A device attached to the system is not functioning. (0x1F)

[10256:12224:0806/081609.652:ERROR:device_event_log_impl.cc(214)] [08:16:09.653] USB: usb_device_handle_win.cc:1048 Failed to read descriptor from node connection: A device attached to the system is not functioning. (0x1F)
[10256:12224:0806/081617.958:ERROR:CONSOLE(167)] "Uncaught (in promise) Error: Assertion failed: Don't send themes to the chrome://extensions page", source: chrome://extensions/extensions.js (167)

Then I created a new profile and enabled some extensions in the new profile and checked out extensions page but it was good.

Then I quit the browser and opened again. It asked me to select the profile there and I deleted the second profile I created and closed the browser again.

After I opened the browser and checked the extensions page, it was back to normal and the log was normal too.

After this I went to my user profile, but it was no longer under Profile1 but under Default this time.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Throrium after that and the extensions page was perfectly fine even after syncing, and my user data was always under Default now.

TLDR:

Extension page was bugged when my user data after syncing was under Profile1 but after I created a new profile and deleted new profile, my user data was under Default and everything was fine afterwards

Questions about this new project - Thorium v.xxx.xxx.xxx

I see that this project is still new and is something like an alpha version, but a few questions:

  1. This Thorium project is something like Ungoogled Chromium?!
I read the information about Thorium, but I'm not entirely sure if it's protected like Ungoogled Chroium ?! Please for further clarification. /Or is it a project - like RobRich999?!/

  2. About Floc - I didn't find anything - is it enabled by default or is it disabled ?!

Thanks for the answers.

For me, question 1 is very important and whether Thorium is like Ungoogled Chromium. According to me, having a translator on the pages means to me that Thorium is not protected like Ungoogled Chromium, but is something like RobRich's builds.

I transferred my entire account. Passwords were not transferred. Strange. I have to add them manually. Good thing you offer a portable version. So far so good.

According to https://amifloced.org/ -> Your browser does not currently have FloC enabled.

As if a little more memory is used?!

--disable-machine-id --disable-encryption-win flags doesn't work

Hi there.

As the title says i've tried to add this two flags to the batch but when i install some extension and then move everything on a different computer, the extension is gone. How to make this fully portable (with everything, extensions, settings, etc...)? Thank you!

Mpv

Hello, i find this extension so we can play URLs in mpv player, bit it seem like there is some problems in windows version : "Windows support is second-class. Feel free to open issues, but be advised that they won't be worked on unless someone else on Windows decides to fix them.

IMPORTANT: The Ruby native client does not work on Windows. You'll need to use the Python native client, which is included in the steps below and all helper scripts."

https://github.com/woodruffw/ff2mpv

this extension can be usefu if we want to increase network cache so we can use mpv palyer with big network cache and big media buffer, so can Thorium Browser integrate this extension to solve this problem or develp fork of this extension to avoid bugs and compatiblity problems please ?

may be this thread can help :

Resources Saver , energy consumption, battery saver

Hello, i discover with great pleasure and joy I your awesome magnificent exceptional extension: Resources Saver!

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/resources-saver/nlfcijlhljpenllloeheihmhoobeefpc?hl=en&authuser=0

Thanks a lot !

and therefore this extension can register an entire website? even with videos?

in changelog: "Built with new optimization: Polly
You can see a write up of the optimizations Thorium uses (including the new Polly) Here, and a page with speed comparisons with screenshots Here. I compare Thorium against Chromium, Chrome, Brave, and Vivaldi."

congratulations, this performance gain and the superiority of Thorium browser over other famous browsers is very impressive!!

just a question, if the performance is superior, then Thorium Browser uses more energy than other browsers in normal use?

If so, and because sometimes the battery gets low and extend laptop battery Life, I make a suggestion even though I know it's very complicated! it will be great if our bleoved Thorium browser add battery saver like in opera browser, yandex browser, and edge browser, thank you very much!

"Beat the heat during summer
There is one more thing we realized recently. If something consumes more energy, it usually gets warmer – basic physics. That's why your laptop gets overheated during your heavy browsing sessions. This heats up your lap, sets off a loud and annoying fan, and can cause problems such as random blue screens or even data loss.

We've made tests comparing the temperature of the bottoms of two laptops. One was running Opera with battery saver enabled and the other one Opera with the mode disabled. Test results with the new battery saver enabled showed that Opera can keep laptops over 3 degrees (C) cooler. It's actually pretty nice difference, especially when you think about bringing your laptop along for summer fun and letting it bake your lap.

Improvements under the hood
Wonder how we achieved this cool down and power savings? With several under-the-hood optimizations:

Reducing activity in background tabs

Waking CPU less often due to optimal scheduling of JavaScript timers

Automatically pausing unused plug-ins

Reduced frame rate to 30 frames per second

Tuning video-playback parameters and forcing use of hardware accelerated video codecs

Pausing animations of browser themes

Including ad blocker – when enabled, it enables even more battery savings"

https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2016/06/battery-saver-opera-browser-for-windows-mac/

Any chance to get an avx2 build too ?

Did some tests with some number crunching web applications and it did actually use avx2. The speed was honestly out of this world. 48h+ (sse2) vs 5 minutes (avx2).

Google voice call & web browser spotify malfunction,

1.) When i try to make a call with google voice, it calls out, but i cant hear it dialing or anyone answer, but in brave browser it works fine. voice.google.com. It appears that google voice is calling out with thorium & working, but that i just cant hear anything whatsoever. I also want to explain the ramifications of this, when I tried to use it with Thorium. It would call out, & have no sound at all, but when I'd call my own phone, my phone rang, even though i couldnt hear anything on google voice's side. I didnt think there would be an issue with Thorium, so i didnt think about that & assumed the problem was being caused by something else, So I thought the 1st phone # i had called had blocked me. And also if this happens with other people, they may think this too & experience distress, or they may think it's google voice thats the problem, & that will cause them distress, etc, or they may think they have a virus. So its important to fix this issue soon, or maybe just warn thorium users about this. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying the thorium experience & appreciate it.

2.) https://open.spotify.com/ web browser version malfunctions & skips randomly, wont play a song properly, very glitchy. This also can cause other issues with the user, they may think they have a virus or that spotify is the one malfunctioning & not thorium & cause them to go on a wild goose chase, so a warning would be a good idea with this too.

Thorium 109 AVX build crashes even though cpu supports AVX

image
image
My Windows 7 system supports AVX but any AVX build of thorium doesn't work and crashes.
A blank windows appears but it crashes immediately.
I am a little noob so how can I give you more information to debug for example logs, crash reports etc?

Tab bar goes blank if a tab favicon updates while the browser is minimized

System Details

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Thorium Version 112.0.5615.166

Problem
Tab bar goes blank if a tab favicon updates while the browser is minimized. Goes back to normal if I click the + button, change window size or switch tab with the dropdown icon. Very annoying with messaging apps like Discord or Whatsapp Web that update the favicon to reflect unread state and count pings.

Screenshots
image

thorium_zq7KGxJ5tJ-00.00.00.000-00.00.11.350.mp4

Additional Notes
Clicking the + to add a new tab, or maximizing/restoring the window fixes it, until it happens again. It's also possible to replicate less consistently by opening an uncached website and immediately minimizing (such as using Win+D).

Persistent Apps shortcut in the bookmark bar.

There is a "ghost" shortcut to chrome://apps in the bookmarks bar that cannot be removed.
Upon right click it behaves as if empty space on the bookmarks bar is clicked. Though upon left clicking, chrome://apps is opened, and even CTRL clicking or middle mouse button work (both open in new tab).

Will remain even after deleting the bookmarks file from appdata, which will remove other bookmarks and sync them back after a few seconds (for me, sync is on).
This is my only nitpick as Thorium works otherwise flawlessly for me.

the installer crash

good morning, when I try to install thorium the installer stops for no reason and the installation fails

icon

For some reason, latest build of Thorium for Windows (M100.0.4848.0) uses a yellow icon with an exclamation sign image
instead of the usual chromium icon (blue circle).
It's not a big of a deal, but it's slightly annoying, makes me think that something is wrong, when, in fact, everything is okay.

True Portable?

I am trying to use portable option so i can use it on multiple machine wtihout need to backup registry and userdata on local :

START "" "%cd%\BIN\thorium.exe" --user-data-dir="%~dp0%\USER_DATA" --allow-outdated-plugins --disable-logging --disable-breakpad --enable-experimental-web-platform-features --new-canvas-2d-api --disable-encryption --disable-machine-id

So should i keep run the BAT file on every browser launch? or i just need to run it once and it is remain portable even i pin the browser on taksbar?

Bulids For XP (NT 5.1) SP3?

i saw of you did make browser support for 7, 8 and 8.1, but question is, when you going to bulid that browser for xp sp3 like 109 version same like you did to 7, 8, 8.1 or something? cuz there other browser like mypal, it takes while of developing, and other people don't want to use chinese chromium, but since i saw of your project about for 7, 8 and 8.1, that's nice project to keep 7, 8 and 8.1, there site of documentation of newer chromium for xp, the documentation is made by discord guy name 030_Nayan猫 Or (andreiixe/Andrei Alexandru) from github (note: i copy everything and pasted it from notepad since site one it required created account, but here if you interested to read)
chromium newer for xp.txt

Thank you

UPD:
There is an avx2 build, so if you've a modern cpu, give that a try:

109.0.5414.129 for Thorium Windows 7

The last version supported chrome for window 7 is 109.0.5414.120. However Chrome released 109.0.5414.129 last February 2023 for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 only as stated in this site. But I also confirmed and tested that this version works also on Windows 7. Will this version can be possible for next release for Thorium (for special Win 7/8/8.1 release)?
