Thanks for the feedback @hobarrera. Let me explain:
By "summary line" I refer to the first line of the commit message, which is in fact recommended to keep below 50 characters. This recommendation can be found in the Git documentation, the Git book, and Tim Pope's popular post about what makes a good commit message. Although it's not explicitly stated in the kernel's "Submitting Patches" guide, kernel developers try to keep it around 50 characters as seen here. People also try to encourage this standard with fun projects like this.
That said, 50 characters is not a hard limit and hopefully c94d0df makes it clear.
Regarding your second point (omitting the period): Again, this rule refers to the summary line. The summary line is effectively the commit title and titles do not end with a period. This is a standard and can be observed by taking a glance at some commits in the kernel source tree. I've also pushed 84e507c which should make it clear.
