I think it should be leiningen instead of cake, it's going to be a nightmare if there are Ruby/RubyGem problems before even getting to Clojure.

Argh, barnes and noble wifi just ate my 5 paragraph post, so here's the short version:
I'm still on the fence about gems. I've got to look into which OSs come pre-installed with gem, off the top of my head I know mac does, and I think ubuntu does as well. I'm also aware there may be wtfs about using another language's package system to bootstrap clojure.
The purpose of the 30 second intro is to get potential users a win (running code) in as few steps as possible. Lein comes in at +1 or 2 steps due to the fact that you have to have a project.clj to lein repl
. Other than that lein & cake's install processes are equal (download script -> chmod -> put in path). Concepts like build systems, fp, and concurrency prims are better suited for the 5 / 20 min tuts, or the addt'l resources page.
This is all WIP, so I'm interested in feedback.

The newer versions of leiningen have the 'repl' task that works without a project, so that would allow people to get it without project.clj.

It ends up using leiningen's version of clojure if there's no project I think.
from clojuredocs.
Ah, I'll try that out.

IIRC lein repl doesn't have completion which will be sort of a bummer for noobs.

Noted, but I'm not so concerned about completion for this exercise.
