You're probably using it wrong, works fine for me. The proper syntax is
ModPE.setItem(int id, String itemIcon, int iconSubindex, String name, int maxStackSize);

ModPE.setFoodItem(int id, String itemIcon, int iconSubindex, int halfHearts, String name, int maxStackSize);

As for craft and furnace recipes, I've heard of crashes from them before for some reason. I'm currently in school, but I'll check it out in a couple of hours.

Item.getName will simply return the name of the item id you pass in, I believe.
