I have tried using LoadImageAtPath instead, and it seems to be working perfectly fine with no crashes.

Edit: I just read "Note that it isn't possible to load multiple images simultaneously using this function." So it's not possible to load images one after the next even if its all asynchronous?

One after another should work since it isn't simultaneous. Can you set generateMipmaps parameter to false and try again?
