from more research on this thread: using a Points mesh allows for a single vertex per image, which is likely the most optimal solution available. However zooming becomes difficult in this case, as one can too easily zoom past a point.

An easier but still performant solution is an indexed InstancedGeometry, which allows us to send just one instance of certain attributes (like the position and vertex pattern) for each image. This reduces the amount of data to be sent to the shaders and uses 4 vertices per image.
