Can confirm this to an extent with a Surface Pen Slim and Laptop Studio 2. While the eraser works as expected in both binding and function, the side button keeps the odd behavior you're describing where it doesn't ever do anything. It also keeps showing the current tool's hover indicator while I hold the side button with the pen close to the screen, while the eraser correctly switched tools when I brought it near the screen.

I'm also experiencing this with xournalpp 1.2.2, but I think it worked previously with the same version (1.2.2). I noticed that in libinput debug-events
, one button appears hard-coded as eraser (not sure if this was different a few months ago, but I suspect it was):
Pressing first button:
event10 TABLET_TOOL_PROXIMITY +6.353s 179.56/132.98 pressure: 0.00 pen (0xc06037c9, id 0x805b) proximity-out
event10 TABLET_TOOL_PROXIMITY +6.358s 179.58*/132.98* pressure: 0.00* eraser (0xc06037c9, id 0x805b) proximity-in axes:p btn:S
event10 TABLET_TOOL_PROXIMITY +6.487s 179.63/133.00 pressure: 0.00 eraser (0xc06037c9, id 0x805b) proximity-out
event10 TABLET_TOOL_PROXIMITY +6.492s 179.73*/133.04* pressure: 0.00* pen (0xc06037c9, id 0x805b) proximity-in axes:p btn:S
Pressing second button:
event10 TABLET_TOOL_BUTTON +8.445s 331 (BTN_STYLUS) pressed, seat count: 1
event10 TABLET_TOOL_BUTTON +8.579s 331 (BTN_STYLUS) released, seat count: 0
I suspect the change is unrelated to Xournalpp and related to a kernel upgrade: https://www.davidrevoy.com/article995/how-a-kernel-update-broke-my-stylus-need-help/show

don't use that brother it doesn't work or you have to do a lot of testing to get it to work, I recommend that you assign the shortcut to your pen buttons in your graphics tablet software.

It is unlikely to be a kernel bug, at least on my end. I am on Windows.

Plus one. I have this same issue
