I think that would be an interesting experiment. Following the HTTP model more closely has been something that's definitely been on my mind, not least so HTTP pass-through becomes a no-brainer. Could even change the API to take request objects instead of references and (always) return response objects.

On the other hand, I haven't really had any significant use-cases outside of HTTP pass-through, yet. So I've been resisting the temptation to (a) make things more complicated than they need to be and (b) adapt the new thing to be like the older, more familiar thing, because it is more familiar.

One idea would be to implement HTTP pass-through and see how far one can get without seriously impacting the API or making the code horrible.
