Hmm, I'm not the one maintaining the copy on F-Droid. I'd argue that it's not proprietary - anyone can write a theme and themes are installed as separate apks. I guess I am the gatekeeper of the store, though I haven't turned down any submissions. It's not much different from deciding which commits to accept.
Haha, the file size did increase a bit. I hadn't noticed (not that 1.8mb is much). There were a bunch of features added (xxxhdpi graphics, floating calc, store) so I don't think any 1 feature is to blame. The widget definitely shouldn't be slow, though.

Will,
I agree it's not proprietary. I chose the wrong word. My bad.
But the application advertises non-free add-ons. If you check other entries in the repository, you'll see that this feature usually leads to a red, negative, remark in the app description.
I'm a bit under the impression that you are using the app's good reputation to place those 1$ themes. However, doing that is not 100% nice.
Regards
Phil

Haha. I understand what you're saying. However, only consider Calculator Light as a part of Calculator. The other themes are owned by Xlythe LLC or by other themers. Themeing is an api - any Android app can say its a theme.
I am selling features for the app I built, even if I am using an open api. But I don't see that as wrong?

If I understood the rules of F-Droid correctly, you are not supposed to.

This package is Free software even under the strict definition used by
Richard Stallman and the free software foundation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Free_Software_Definition
F-Droid does have an Antifeature warning for apps that "although Free
Software themselves, promote other non-Free applications or plugins."
While Calculator 4.0.1 does have a list of plugins an it does includes
non-Free plugins, it is barred in a menu and the app does not have any
annoying behavior that promote them. The menu item is clearly named as
to warn people who don't what to spend money not to click it. Hence at
this point I do not consider this add-on list to be an Antifeature.
Should the package maintainer deem it necessary they can build a copy
of the program with out the shop menu item or load the list of themes
from a site that only lists free teams. In most of the open source
world we would give our programs build flags to easily to toggle
building in features like themes or graph support. That way the
package maintainer can easily build a version with only the features
he wanted. I don't even know if this is possible with android apps but
if so I would love to see how it is done.
