I tried various workarounds, trying to count the input packet numbers as in the old code and using 0 instead of kAppleUSBSSIsocContinuousFrame. However it does not work (as it never worked). It seems the USB framenumber is constantly changing in an unpredictable way as there are many other devices on the bus (trackpad, keyboard etc).

The original code had code for this but I have never seen that work either. It had already comments that it didn't work in the code.

I will wait for Apple's response first.

For sure it would be good to know IF it compiles on XCode 6. Since I started this project, Apple has the bumped XCode version. I don't want to spend time on that now, I prefer getting the stuff running properly over supporting the latest. So I' still on XCode 5.

But I don't expect too much from recompilation. I suppose (hope) that Apple tries to keep binary backwards compatibility so that old programs keep running and then it should not make any difference. But apparently, this assumption does not entirely hold already...

The windows code contains also code to compute a start frame.

Tried to re-enable usbInputStream.usbFrameToQueueAt and use it as it used to be

But as before it gives USB pipe READ error e00002ee (kIOReturnIsoTooOld isochronous I/O request for distant past)

Then tried to align the frame nr with the next multiple of 8. Same error.

Maybe inspecting the source code where the error originates may help. The error might come from AppleUSBEHCI_UIM.cpp

Even when adding 512 to the current frame nr, it still gives USB pipe READ error e00002ee (kIOReturnIsoTooOld).

Tried to move the init of usbFrameToQueueAt closer to the call to read. Did not help.

It kind of works if I use GetFrameNumber() + 3 and ALWAYS compute this value right before the call to read(). But it gives a huge amount of clicks in the track.

It seems to work with this specific order:

  • Use GetFrameNumber() + frameOffset in the VERY FIRST call to Read()
  • use kAppleUSBSSIsocContinuousFrame in all subsequent calls.

It seems to do the same thing.

In logic it detects the card but when I click 'record' it doesn't detect the microphone. Just a flat line. In Audacity the player head just gets stuck on 0 and won't record either.

For the new version I just ran the 'kextInstall' again. Is that the correct way of doing it?

To install the new version, just download the new zip file, unzip, and run the kextInstall in there. It uninstalls the old and installs the new driver.

Thanks for all your effort. I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work out.

Maybe Apple can bring some good input on the issue. But I would not hold my breath, often they close the ticket just as "known issue".

That's what I did and still no luck unfortunately. Well actually I didn't have to unzip anything. The folder just downloaded without being zipped first.

In the mean time I have WindowsToGo running of a usb stick and have installed my emu box on there. It works perfectly on that. So for now I'll just have to switch to windows anytime I need to record! Not ideal but better than nothing.

Yeah I also thought of installing Yosemite on a stick. But I expect it way too slow to work with.

Thanks for your interest in my EMU driver and thanks for the report. Yes, on Yosemite there is this problem. USB pipe READ error e00002ef I checked your report and it is also the problem on your machine.

I will check the trouble on Mavericks, I suppose that should work fine.

trambouter, the error you get on Mavericks appears identical to the one on Yosemite. Very interesting, so far I believed that this was a Yosemite-only problem but apparently there is something else going on here. Which version of Mavericks did you test on? Which type of iMac are you working on ?

I now notice other errors in trambouter's log on Mavericks

4 channel 24 bit @ 44100 Hz is not supported. Suggesting alternate setting 255

Seems we are running into a difference between the 0204 and 0404 here. And into a bug with the alternate-setting code.

The 0204 has 2 input and 4 output channels. The control panel is asking for 4 channels.
However there are only 2 input channels and we get in EMUUSBAudioConfigObject::FindNextAltInterfaceWithNumChannels

So the driver implements a policy where getting the number of channels is more important than getting the requested rate.

This policy can't work, as we must have the correct rate first in order to synchronize the input and output pipes.

I missed a bigger loop that iterates over the number of channels - it was documented a bit weird (with "this is stupid" and "will never be mono") but it simply counts down from 10, 8, 6, .. down to 2 channels.

There seems a discrepancy between the code in EMUUSBAudioEngine::GetDefaultSettings (that does the search "for info->numChannels = 10 down to 2 step -2") and EMUUSBAudioEngine::performFormatChangeInternal which does NOT do such a search for a fitting interface.

trambouter, there seems a problem with the code managing the changes of sample rate. What happens if you avoid changing the rate (not using the control panel)? Can you sample sound then?

On my compu (Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013, Intel Core i7) the plugin just works fine in Yosemite! I just ran the installer and started quicktime to play some music. Went without a problem.

Also trambouter had this problem both on Yosemite and on Mavericks.

This problem apparently is not related to Yosemite but to something deeper in the system. Maybe some USB chips or system USB driver bug?

I can use a fixed increment every Read cycle, but the correct value needs to be determined. The rationale eludes me so far so I will make a table with working increments

If sampling 4 channels instead of 2, this does not change anything. But this may be because we are not changing the rate at the driver level (it's always at 4 there).

It seems the correct value is related to the pollInterval. The number seems to change only every millisecond (so it stays the same within microframes). So for all polInterval=4 cases, we need to divide NUM_FRAMES by 2.

Ben, trambouter, I think I can avoid the for you problematic kAppleUSBSSIsocContinuousFrame by precomputing the USB rate ( as in the table above).

To test this hypothesis, I made a test kext named "EMUUSBAudio test.kext". Could you be so kind to test it on your machines?

To install it,

  • download the latest zip and unzip;
  • delete the normal "EMUUSBAudio.kext"
  • rename the "EMUUSBAudio test.kext" to "EMUUSBAudio.kext" .
  • run the kextInstall script.
  • use controlpanel to select 44 or 48 kHz
  • select EMU only for recording in Audacity. Don't use EMU for playback.
  • sample some sound with audacity.

My hope that this test kext works in the following case : 44kHz rate or 48kHz RECORDING only. Playback probably fails still.

Wouter1, on test kext record work now ! Playback don't work. But Logic Pro report 137ms latency on input with 64samples buffer =(
I exeperimental with original creative driver - just set "SafetyOffset" = 512 in Info.plist instead of 192, this increase rountrip latency but help get rid pop and cracks on records.

Yuri that's good to hear! So this is a way to a solution for you.

I know that this is not ok yet and record not working. I just applied a quick hack to see if this was the right direction to a solution.

Long ago I also messed with the SafetyOffset of the original driver but it just delays the cracking a bit longer. It keeps returning.

Is the latency important for you? "Roundtrip latency" can be ZERO if you just use the "direct monitor" button on the EMU. You don't even need a computer attached.

Wouter1, roundtrip latency is important for me, because i play guitar with software plugins and and I want to immediately hear the result of processing plug-ins.
When i record voice or clean guitar, i use direct monitoring.
Even if the delay will be is about 8 ms (4 ms on input, and 4 ms on output), it will be a good result.

I think the read errors are fixed properly. Here it seems to work still ok at all frequencies.

The write errors on some computers (playback) has not yet been fixed.

trambouter, Ben, could you give this a try and confirm if recording now works on all frequencies including 192kHz?

From the output it seems playback is working fine. There are some known errors but nothing serious. The last line "Output Hiccup" is the message after which playback should be working. Since you don't report anything after that it seems playback started properly. I propose that you wait till I fix #19 for playback and then check again.

Ben, trambouter, twisxst, the audio playback has been fixed in a similar way as the recording.
Could you please give this another try?

Playback should now work on your machines also at all rates.

BTW occasionally I hear tiny clicks in the playback, there may still some sync issue somewhere. Not a big problem but I'd like to hear about these small problems too.

Notice there is still #21 stuttering when playing brief sound.

Yes there sometimes is one click about 30 seconds after starting playback. I don't hear further clicks after that. I'll make a ticket for it.#26
