This is actually caused by the syntax highlighting script shipped with Vim itself, not by our plug-in

Linking the folding to the syntax highlighting is unfortunately a somewhat fundamental problem with Vim. Without that linking, Vim analyses about a dozen lines before the current line to figure out its syntax within the current context, to catch things such as line continuation and multi-line strings.
When linking the syntax to the folding, much more context has to be analyzed of course to catch nested expressions and so on.

For large files you can set the foldmethod to manual to overwrite the settings in the syntax highlighting script:

:set foldmethod=manual

Since I've changed the folding settings I've much less issues with other plugins and file types, so I prefer leaving without it.
