The Rails 2 plugin is using an older version of the Google Visualization charts (i.e. not corechart, just the chart itself), which is why in the javascript generated, you don't see "corechart" in it.
There are also other changes in the latest gem (which should be compatible with Rails 2 too) to make it work with "corechart", therefore I would really recommend that you use the gem instead.
