I didn't realize that wezterm.time.call_after now allowed for fractional seconds! That means it basically can behave like the wezterm.schedule_event. It is not quite the same thing because it will still wait for some time (don't really know what is the minimum) while the solution proposed could run immediately if the mux wasn't busy.

Currently I'm using the call_after with 0.00001 seconds (don't really know if there is a fixed minimum amount or not, I thought that it would cap at 1ms but apparently not) and it seems to be working quite well.

If I used a time of 1ms or 0.1ms, some times it would still be perceptible that it takes some time to change when hovering. While when changing tab it is always immediate. I tried lowering the time even more and with 0.00001 (0.01ms) it is pretty much immediate, just like I wanted. Now I can change the status_update_interval to whatever I want (even 1 minute or more) because when it needs to be called it is already being called, like when changing workspaces.

I'm closing this now, since the feature I wanted can be done using wezterm.time.call_after with a very low amount of time.
