Ok so a solution to this turns out to be to
include BreadcrumbsOnRails::ControllerMixin
in ApplicationController or each controller that uses breadcrumbs_on_rails.
I don't understand why this include
is required to have the test environment pick up the ControllerMixin class while other environments seem to pick this up without it being explicitly included. Anyway, cucumber is happy again and I have tests!
