There are two differences between ABORT
and GOODBYE
: the one you mention above, and GOODBYE
must be replied by a GOODBYE
(if the first GOODBYE
wasn't sent by oneself), whereas ABORT
is not expected to receive a reply.
The idea with making those two actual different messages is to reduce overloaded meaning and handling per message type.
In fact, we introduced ABORT
only lately for above reason, despite ABORT
and GOODBYE
being structurally identical.
In a way, it's a question of tradeoff: minimize number of message types vs minimize overloading of message semantics and handling. I think in this case the latter is a "good enough" reason to have a separate message type. If you care, we can do a poll and ask for opinions ..
