Bump on this, I would be interested in helping build the frontend for this, but I'm still fairly new to the project, how badly would this mess up Plex? Is it just a frontend concern or is it more complicated than that?

Plex is a whole different thing it honestly breaks no matter what you do. You might need to readd the server after such a big change.
Some sort of way to reorder channels quickly is planned for 1.5.0 a PR on this would certainly be nice.
It can be done on the front end alone, because there are api endpoints for reading and editing channels. After the front end is implemented I can add backend improvements to make it perform better.
My greatest issue with implementing this is I have no idea how the ui would work, I am not very good with UX and angular.
