Figured out docker and containers in general.
It doesn't really make any sense to run this program in its own container, its entire purpose is to act as a middleman between other programs and privileged storage. If anything this program should be paired up with another program or run on a consolidated storage server.
init scripts & systemd units make more sense, but even then I don't think it is entirely necessary.
