I think we need to bump the PHPUnit version - see sebastianbergmann/phpunit#3765 - to at least 7.

PHP 7.4 compatibility done with PR #52 (master) & PR #51 (v2). Seems to be unrelated to PhpUnit7...

@alexpott Please let me know whether the current master and v2 are working for Drupal versions. In case that's fine, I'd continue with releasing new 3.1.3 and 2.1.3 versions of the package.
