What kind of GPU are you running? IIRC, GtkRadiant throws a fit if running ATI/Intel graphics or otherwise running without disabling Windows composition. There are a few options that might help in Preferences -> Display -> 2D Display/Rendering, if you haven't checked those already.

I can't reproduce the same errors here with the same build, though I'm running Windows 7, nVidia GTX280.

GTS 8800. I'll check the Windows composition stuff and the various options.

I didn't try this build yet but from what you described it sounds like the same that occurs with GTKradiant 1.4 and windows 7 composition features enabled.

Edit: I had this issue with a gtx470 in 1.4

Problem is, there's no easy option to turn off composition in Windows 8 apparently. I've been looking for the right hacks to disable and confirm if that's what's causing the problem. I'm hoping that we can support composition eventually though, because that's just where the platform is going.

Oh boy, looks like Microsoft made DWM a core OS component and can't be disabled. Incompatible software is supposed to fall back to software rendering, which I'm guessing Radiant doesn't agree with.

I ran this build under wine and it behaved just fine. Obisidian, if you enable aero/transparency etc. on windows 7, are you getting the same problems I reported?

from gtkradiant.

0bsidian avatar 0bsidian commented on May 23, 2024

Yes, I can confirm. Disabling the option in Preferences, "nVidia/Aero bug" I immediately encounter rendering issues consistent with your screenshots. I also know that this issue occurs with 1.5 and I believe with 1.4 as well.

It's possible that this may have been patched with NetRadiant, although they may have just disabled Aero (which won't help when Windows 8 rolls around). I don't have it installed here to test, though I can probably ask around if that would help.

I didn't realize there was an entry in preferences. It defaults to on (good) .. I'm surprised it's specific to NVidia?

  • Anyone with an ATI card can confirm running with composition enabled and no problem?
  • I will check on Windows 8 if there is a return code to check that will indicate that disabling composition failed

Far as long term solution, I suppose we'll have to look at latest gtkgl and do more in depth investigation.

cityy: this thread is about the problems caused by aero transparency, especially on windows 8 where it appears it can't be turned off. Please make sure to report other rendering and display problems elsewhere.

There have been some changes to the aero stuff since Windows 8 preview. We may be able to disable aero from the code side again. Someone will need to confirm.

Microsoft is supposed to send me a free copy which is yet M.I.A. In the meantime, I'll try to see if I can find time this week to download the trial version from MSDN and install it on a spare box.

GtkRadiant 1.6.3 works fine on Windows 8 as far as I could tell. I loaded up q3dm1 and toyed around with it for a bit.

As with Windows 7, if installing GtkRadiant in "Program Files" or other write protected directory, the program MUST be executed as administrator when running it the first time or it will hang.

Only real issue has to do with font rendering in the viewport (menus work fine). The grid line units and brush size info font is difficult to read. I think there is a font missing on Windows 8 systems that GtkRadiant is expecting to use, so it's trying to substitute with something else.

See image (sorry for image quality, Windows Paint outputs a crappy gif):

Will see if I can repro the font problem. Otherwise will close this as a non issue.

opened a separate bug for the font problem. closing this .. been running on Windows 8 with no problems.

No chance of trying to dig further as to what the cause of the issues with rendering and nvidia+aero are so aero can stay on?

from gtkradiant.

TTimo avatar TTimo commented on May 23, 2024

Please report a separate bug for trying to enable aero back if you wish to. Someone mentioned that we may no longer need to turn it 'off' in the latest GtkR release.
