Another option to get the pull request is to create a git alias like:
pull-pr = !sh -c 'git fetch origin pull/$0/head:pr-$0 && git co pr-$0'
Which will fetch the pull request, create a branch for it, and switch to it. The benefit here is that you don't need to add additional "refs" to each project

I've been using the Hub gem recently where you can do git checkout URL_OF_PR and thats been working pretty nicely. I'd be happy to rework that gist and get it into a PR for the guides.
