--config doesn't relate to the config file to load, it's the build config to run (i.e. are you building for debug, or with coverage, etc).

there is not a lot of options missing in the cli to totally replace the config file.

This is true in a sense because -o exists so you can override basically everything in the config, but I'm not sure that's a very nice experience; a non-trivial config would be a very long command as flags.

Actually you can gave me the answer, thanks a lot!
I can just do something like this:

please build --repo_root=$PWD -o buildconfig.XXX:xxx -o parse.gitfunctions:bool:false -o build.passenv:PATH -o please.selfupdate:bool:false

from please.
