The navbar height for the themes range from 40px to 65px. So that navbar height + additional spacing, which comes down to the content and personal preference. I tend to add 40px to the navbar height.

One thing to look out for is that if your site is responsive, you'll want to set a different body padding (maybe 0) at smaller sizes when the navbar is static positioned.

Ah, I'd actually been only setting the padding to be exactly the same as the height on the navbar, which I still think looks pretty good if you're worried about using too much vertical space, but it does generally look better with some extra padding.
