Now that I think about it , it seems like the behavior of the function makes sense, if you understand it strictly as pairwise comparison. Generally speaking though, extending the function to providing an aggregation function might be a better idea, so user can supply max, min, median, mean, etc. Some distances return Inf, so you have to somehow deal with that..., possibly with additional argument (na.rm, inf.rm?)
