Another reason to do this is that once we release this publicly, we will hopefully get others pushing updates, fixes, etc and we want a way to easily manage this and test changes prior to merging with master through the use of a development branch

Yes, definitely. I was just waiting for something I could call "stable" before making that split.

For some reason Git didn't want to let me checkout to your develop branch (probably just a local sync issue), so I am now using the dev branch for development.
