Hi,
From what I understand, I am not sure you really need to used tf.data.
You could try something like this instead:
import grain.python as grain
import tensorflow_datasets as tfds
source = tfds.data_source('imdb_reviews', split='train[:10]')
loader = grain.load(source=source)
example = next(iter(loader))
print(example) # bytestring
print(example['text'].decode('utf-8')) # stringfrom datasets.
