This type of thing would violate the whole premise of Mongo would it not? If you needed a follower wouldn't you just store that follower in a followers hash in your "User" document?
Store the followee in a following hash on your User document or whatever your table might be?
I have ran accross this anywhere for Mongo but I would assume you wouldn't use the same type of strategy at all.
