Yeah, we should definitely be referencing these more safely, but also need a more reliable command to get the release version.

The os-release documentation
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/os-release.html
states that VERSION should be part of the os-release file. I think it is a bug on arch linux side to not include it. I hope that this bug gets fixed
In the mean time, I think envinfo should have defensive code that prints unknown when it does not find an attribute that it is looking for. If that sounds right to you I will go ahead and make a PR.
