I really like this idea of "optional extras". I think we should talk a bit about how to format these. I can imagine two methods

  1. coloured boxes or subsections (for example, a "bonus material" section to each lesson at the end)
  2. separate files, perhaps an expansion on the "_part1" "_part2" model we already have

should they be separate .Rmd files, or should they appear within the lesson but formatted slightly differently?

this could be how we resolve the questions in #4 and #3

I'm an R novice who has helped at a Python 2-day event and taken the instructor training course. I worked through the first 5 lessons a few days ago, and my overall impressions are (1) good stuff, thanks! (2) the Python/shell/Github lessons I've experienced get into exercises much more quickly. If y'all are amenable to the idea, I'd like to see if I can reshape one or two of the Rmd files to begin with examples, and make the explanations more concise.

@SamPenrose I completely agree with that sentiment. I'd particularly like to see some easy challenges (i.e. see #22) right after the relevant idea has just been demonstrated.

I agree that it would make sense to have the novice material contained in one day, with a split point. Having gone through all the lessons I think the most natural split point is either before or after the functions lesson.

  • before the functions lesson would make it harder to create a "capstone" challenge due to the limited material that's been covered at that point.
  • after the functions lesson would mean having the functions material at the end of a session, which might lead to it being rushed due to time limitations / students not being able to take it in fully at the end of a day!

I think it might make sense to move the ggplot plotting material before the functions, and having a plotting-based capstone challenge? Plotting can be a nice way to show some more of the "story" of the dataset.

I have a suggestion. Why don't we begin with a document that outlines how lessons are supposed to fit together. Something like 00-lesson-plan.Rmd (or .md, if no R is required). This document could contain a one-day "recipe" for an R lesson (or even multiple alternate "recipes") and some 2-day ones as well. I think this would be easier than trying to agree on where we should stick a break point in the lessons. It will also encourage modular lesson development.

What do you think? would anyone be interested in submitting a PR with such an outline?

I think some notes to this effect could be added to the extras/guide.md instructor guide.

Closing for now. I think this will be resolved by future discussed changes to the instructor guide.
