for updating the container there should be the PUT
method rather than the POST
- which should be meant for the resource creation, according to the endpoints you provided
from web-publisher.
But Container will be created only from template level, so no creation with rest api. PUT
is for replacing whole resource, for updating we should use PATCH
then.

method sounds to be a better choice and less bandwidth consuming.

How is a widget linked to the container?

it will be added through rest api. Container will have one more property - relation many to many - widgets
. Not sure yet how templator will can setup default widgets in container. Maybe jest with rendering widget inside container like:
