ahh. Do you see the little (edit) boxes on gmail? They are the visual identification that Edit with Emacs has found boxes that are editable.

The latest version adds a bit more feedback with the icon colour and mouseover text.

I think that the problem is simpler than I thought. Gmail doesn't used a TEXTAREA
for editing email. Too bad, really.

Are you sure? I'd still like to get to the bottom of what's going on because I can edit gmail messages fine on my setup. However Gmail does use a lot of embedded iframes which makes it harder to find the text areas.
On Chrome if you have the development tools installed you can right click on the edit box and select inspect element. That should show you a text area in the DOM tree.
A thought occurs, have you disabled the rich text editing facility of Gmail?
