The button is less of a problem on Windows now as Chrome supports hiding browser action buttons. I hope this feature would come to Linux soon.

Is that via browser configuration or requiring extension support?

Nothing is required. Just drag the buttons around, sort of like the Windows tray.

I updated my svn version to 41808 (version number 5.0.356.0), and it has the feature I was referring to.
