Removing SMTP support makes total sense to me on this

I won't recommend to remove SMTP support until we've fully working http api.

Clearly, HTTP API is working very well and we've less and less weirdness reported. So, I believe in next major release (not the current due major release) we should be able to remove SMTP support.

what about performance?
is the HTTP API not taking 3-5 seconds to complete the transaction?

SMTP being chatty, unless there are other reason, HTTPs should be significantly faster anyway.

I'm going to close this issue. One, it is old. Two, there are a number of users that mention in support forum that they use SMTP — https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/sparkpost/.
