I was wondering if there was any update on this. What repositories are you referring to when you say "the various platform repositories"?
from java.
By "the various platform repositories", I meant Ubuntu, CentOS, etc. package repositories. It'd be easier to update the code to refer to one package when an update is released rather than track down new packages for each distribution.
As for an update, I maintained this cookbook while I was employed at Socrata, but no longer work there and don't have the time to actively maintain the cookbook. Essentially, the cookbook needs a major rewrite and should focus on a v2 release.

FYI: CentOS and RHEL 6.6 now have OpenJDK 1.8 available:

Name and summary matches only, use "search all" for everything.
The default.rb
check should be fixed to reflect that.

Yep, this will get tricky here quickly as openjdk 8 pushes out. Maybe we could let the package manager fail instead of trying to catch early (push the logic out of the recipe). You may have other repos that have openjdk as well.

Amazon linux also has openjdk available.

Has there been any decision made about this? Right now I'm running a forked version using the patch that is mentioned in this issue.
