the batched moving of multiple contacts from one source to another would be useful, not least because there isn't a lossless way to export contacts to a file.

from the next version 4.0.x it will be possible to change a given contacts contact source at the edit screen

tibbi avatar tibbi commented on June 12, 2024

yes both are on the roadmap, but maybe not that soon

Is this per contact only or are you adding a mass move tool as well?

this is per contact only, mass move might come someday too

I will write here instead of opening a new ticket.

I am using v4.4.0 from f-droid.org on Android 6. An attempt to change the contact source results in "An unknown error occurred" upon hitting the save button. The contact seems to be moved to the new home, though, AFAICT.

so the moving works well, just an error appears? Is there the "Phone storage (not visible by other apps)" involved in the move, or you are using some 2 casual sources?

Moving contacts from Phone to SIM works well for me. Is it possible to copy a contact instead? Thanks.

This is surprisingly difficult to find. It would be a pretty killer feature.

tibbi avatar tibbi commented on June 12, 2024

you can already export the wanted contacts in a .vcf file, then pick another contact source at importing. It is a really easy workaround

chaserene avatar chaserene commented on June 12, 2024

@tibbi in my experience, as I said, this process (export contacts into .vcf -> import into another source) is not lossless. I have contacts with custom pictures, rare field types and custom field names, and neither .vcf, nor .csv (with eu.stargw.contactsimport) can preserve all of this information. I was very glad to find Simple Contacts, because changing the contact source in it transfers everything losslessly. the only downside is that it's very labor-intensive because I have to do it one by one.

I believe both @0cwa, just like me, is looking for the "mass move" function you mentioned above a few years ago.
