Looks like there is no direct way to detect an error loading an iframe. Instead, we could initially put up a "loading" dialog over the iframe, then use the load event on the iframe to hide the dialog. After some timeout, if the load event has not fired, we could replace the "loading" dialog with an error message.

The load event fires even on failure, and there is nothing in the event to distinguish between success and failure. I also can't find any attribute on a cross-origin iframe that will distinguish between a successful and an unsuccessful load.

So I will have to call this infeasible.
