I move the discussion here, just to have a backlog. Because I have an impression I have the same questions every 6 month and then forget the ansers π
So why can't we let all students who knows the url to register on gitlab without ldap and then let repository master to associate them with the project?

I'm no LDAP expert, but don't forget there's also the Git, the Jenkins, the Redmine, ... And in the future, there might be other additional servers/services. It's probably good to combine all the credential management in one place. Otherwise, we'll have a zoo of different users for different services...
Not a friend of allowing registration for everyone with a "secret" URL--security through obscurity should not be used [1], especially on a public server like SimSGS.
Currently, the real problem in my opinion is that we don't have an easily accessible web interface for requesting the creation of a new user account.
