I've printed out the contents of the line where the error occours.

ax = 0
axis = (0,)
arr.shape: ()

the array is not a tuple.

Then this piece of code occurs:
items *= arr.shape[ax]
where items = 1
Thus:
1 *= ()[0]
It tries to multiply with the first item of an empty tuple... -_-'

Any hints on what to do? I'm thinking about packing data into a list of tuples, but I am hesitant because until now the only thing the SOM has processed was a numpy array.

EDIT:
arr.shape = ()
because the previous call is
rcount = _count_reduce_items(arr, axis)
where axis = None, and this is defined by the function

I had this issue, can you make sure that data is a square matrix, if not then you have to do required padding.
