This issue is fixed in the Play master using the --ignore-runners flag.

I'm actually not sure that entirely fixes things. With --ignore-runners=org.specs2.runner.JUnitRunner, I was sometimes getting empty JUnit XML result files. Whether the files are empty depends on which order SBT chooses to run the tests in.

Sorry for the long delay. I've finally tested with a recent build of Play's master branch, and this bug has been resolved. Thanks for looking into this.
Note for anybody reading this in the future: 2.1.1-RC2 does not fix this issue. You'll likely need to wait for the 2.2 release.
