That means we weren't able to get a valid framebuffer configuration. Are you sure you have OpenGL 4.5 support? The output of glxinfo -v would also be helpful if you can paste it somewhere.

I had to install mesa-demos to run glxinfo. Is that a dependency of stgl or just for debugging? Should I contact the package maintianer to add this a dependency?

It's just for debugging. See the line that says " Max core profile version: 3.3"? Unfortunately that means your GPU doesn't support OpenGL 4.5 which is currently the minimum supported version. I should be able to drop that down in the future (maybe a month or so?), but for the moment you're out of luck unless you want to write some code. Sorry ;(
